How to Plan a Body of Work

Hello Friends,

Remember last time I explained that an artist’s sketchbook is the central place where we gather our creative thoughts and plan our next body of work.

Today I would like to share with you one way to implement the planning process for a body of work.  A body of work consists of several paintings by one artist with a common theme. That theme can be the medium that is used, a special technique, a particular color, or a distinguishable style.  Creating this work helps the artist focus on one idea for an extended amount of time.

The sketchbook is where the body of work is planned.

1. Decide on the theme for the project. Often I choose style and technique to be the theme since I work in several mediums. Whether I am using acrylic paint or charcoal and ink, my style and technique will be the same throughout.

2. Test out the mediums you are planning to use (see following pics)

3. Practice several compositions (see following pics)

4. Write about the theme and what you plan to accomplish with this work.

5. Begin painting.  Find time to work on it everyday.

I find the sooner I begin painting, the more quickly things tend to come together.  Don’t spend too much time planning.  Just give yourself a day or two and then start painting.

The learning is in the process.

The creation is in the process.

The journey is in the process.

Move with the process.

The journey will take you to the end.

Until next time.
